Noisia - Alpha Centauri

Right then....

Not posted in a while due to extreme levels of work and busyness.

Well, that and I'm often far too much of a lazy bastard too.
It would seem that this blog has for the past few months been going more so backwards than anything, as some posts have been disappearing (although I do blame this on google for deleting various posts that one can assume breaches their copyright policies).

So it wasn't me that deleted your last post in a rage of fury Adam (the other SLW writer), honest...

Moving on however, Noisia's debut album (Split The Atom) has just dropped in a hype induced mess of warbling bass lines and drum hits that were physically described by my house mate last night in a manner of which nearly broke my door.

One of my favorite tracks from the album is Alpha Centauri; a filthy house tune characterised by Noisia's finely tuned trademark production standards, their heavy basslines, and their staggeringly impressive beats.
Definatley something for the dubstep lover, this track's main focus is firmly set on the bass, whilst the tack remains within the lower tempo ranges, showing just how diverse Noisia are in their mastery of D&B, dubstep and house.
The long intro is perhaps slightly annoying, but once it kicks in, this is a an absolute floor stomper. And then some.

Every now and again, something totally bizarre yet ridiculously compelling somehow starts to manifest itself in the online music scene; and this time round, it looks like Die Antwoord are set to take the net by storm.

Coming from South Africa, these guys include a lot of the Afrikaans language into their music, and they are undeniably, musical marmite. I'm currently having doubts on whether I should post this or not, but there is something so brilliantly strange about them that I'm going to have to...

I apologise in advance if you feel that I have wasted a few precious minutes of your life, but these guys are something so awesomely weird that I just have to stick it up here....

Been playing this song so much recently, had it for a while (it's been out for nearly a year now), but only just got round to ordering the vinyl, which I am now very eagerly anticipating the arrival of...

What You Won't Do For Love is a welcome change in pace for the Californian producer, who normally exhibits very dark, heavy dubstep styles in his works, whilst this song has much more relaxed and mellow vibe. Although it does still retain a large degree of dubstep stylings.

FIrstly I'd like to apologise for not posting all that much recently, I've been ridiculously busy with a whole host of things that I'm not going to go into at this moment in time....

Sub Focus' new album has been years in the making, hell even Timewarp is on it and that's been about for well over a year ago.
But!

His new album drops (FINALLY!) on the 12th of October, and it's going to be a stonker.

One of my favorite tracks off the album is an electro house track, "Move Higher", which adds an interesting twist to an album full of mostly D&B tracks. The track is beautifully crafted, and whilst it is a house track, it still very much has that Sub Focus vibe to it.

So, from Brooklyn's own Saved By The Bell dropout AC Slater comes a few excellent tracks for the old archive.

Firstly, Calm Down, following the standard frenetic-twitchy bass of some nice warm dubsteppery up with with some frankly reassuring vocals. Try to imagine a nice cup of half-hot chocolate-half-whisky and you won't be far wrong.

Next, the forever-remixed Jack Got Jacked (Original) with AC's mid-heavy lines and some pretty tight little snare/pistol samples underpinning an excellent example of what fidget is merrily drifting towards.

What Do You Hear? - Ajapai

Clocked this a few days ago, and it's something of a heavy hitter to say the least...

Perhaps known more so for his production of house tracks, Japanese born Ajapai has come up with a dark and dirty mish-mash of a tune, starting off with a deep and moody intro before progressing into some blazingly heavy dubstep breakbeats.
The thing I like so much about this tune is the progression into a four to the floor beat about halfway through. It adds a massive surprise in the track and leaves the listener asking themselves what the hell has just happened!

La Roux - I'm Not Your Toy (Jack Beats remix)

There is no disputing that La Roux has done pretty damn well for herself with her current album. The massive singles In For the Kill and Bullet Proof have been all over the charts, the radio, and the blogs, thanks to their catchy electronic riffs and flowing vocals.

However, one of the most brilliant things about this album is the sheer amount of remix fodder that it has given to the dance community. With the countless remixes of In For The Kill (hell, even I did one), and many other remixes of just about all of her other tracks, this album has helped La Roux to become a household name.

One of the best remixes I've recently heard is Jack Beats' remix of I'm Not Your Toy, which combines the aforementioned catch riffs and vocals with that trademark Jack Beats wobble and a a cut up chorus section.

Bop - Clear Your Mind

Now, where to start with this one.

Following on from a seemingly on-going Hospital Records orgy, the label's newest recruits, Bop, fresh from his (frankly Snares-sounding) EP Song About My Dog appears to have redefined drum 'n bass, veering it into an Autechre arena.

Striking, unsettling and powerful, utilising the clicks and dinks that have defined glitch with, well, the typical 160+ tempo of drum 'n bass, I suppose, Bop's brainchild is definitely interesting, though definitely an introspective album.

Well, it's up for debate anyway, so here's a minimalist (although arguably the busiest track on the album) piece for you to devour.

And I promise to steer away from this label for a while. Promise ;)

Really clever mashup here from Bark!, taking Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg's Next Episode and mashing it over Mr. Scruff's Spandex Man.
Adds a really interesting twist and a fun take on what is an originally brilliant tune in the first place.
Perhaps the only quibble with the mash is that the acapella is the clean version, but this hardly detracts from it.

Down to business.

Upon my return to the real world after muchos festival going, I came across a new Fake Blood remix floating around on the interwebs (well, I first found it on You Can Call Me Pelski , which is rather good music blog if I do say so myself).

It's a remix of Miike Snow's Animal (They're a band, not a person =D ), and I must admit, at first I was somewhat disappointed. I was expecting a dirty club banger akin to all the previous Fake Blood stuff, but no.
I shunned it immediately, but I kept listening to it. It grew on me. The happy little melodies that play throughout build up around a very mellow vocal line, and I just can't stop listening to it.

I wouldn't play it to destroy a club, but I would play it wherever else. It's just very nice.

Beach Break Festival '09

Apologies all round for the lack of posts recently, I've been very busy going to various festivals and partying like a complete nutter.

One of these festivals, was a small student festival called BEACH BREAK LIVE in Kent.
Despite problems running up to the final week of the festival (it was originally supposed to be in St. Agnes, Cornwall), Beach Break pulled through and put on a show to remember.

Despite only accommodating 10,000 students, Beach Break put on acts and bands that would be more akin to a much bigger, and much more mainstream festival.

The main stage featured acts from DIZZEE RASCAL to the ZUTONS, however perhaps one of the most impressive things about this festival was the sheer scale of the dance line up.

With CHASE AND STATUS, DJ YODA, SCRATCH PERVERTS, JACK BEATS, CASPA AND RUSKO and many more, Beach Break secured some of the hottest dance acts around, making sure there was something for everyone.

Highlights of the event had to be CASPA AND RUSKO, putting on a near perfect set of bouncy dubstep bangers with a smattering of drum and bass towards the end.

After a technical glitch at the start of his set, DJ YODA was also on top form, perfectly mixing an imaginative selection of hip hop, drum and bass, dubstep, and even bits of Johnny Cash and the Beatles. Although Yoda did seem to run out of steam when his set was near a close, but the general amazing skill and imagination in the rest of the set more than made up for it.

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip were also brilliant on the main stage, infusing thought provoking rhyme with expertly crafted electronica, and some very insightful banter in between songs (ahem) =D .

One disappointment however, was with CHASE AND STATUS, although I can't stress how much this wasn't their fault. They simply couldn't be heard over the crowd, which was most likely due to sound limiting that was put in place after a certain time for the benefit of the locals.

But the most impressive thing about this festival was just the general vibe. Everyone was so chilled out and so very happy, and talking to the security at the end of the festival, it seems they themselves were surprised with the lack of trouble that they had to deal with.

After doubling in capacity since the last year, I've got a feeling that Beach Break is just going to become bigger and better on the student calender in years to come, especially if you're a dance music fan.

The Blank/Dick Tracey

Recently found an absolute stonker of a dubstep tune on beatport.

Skism's "The Blank" has been remixed by 16 bit, and the results are dirty na-ha-sty.

Heavier than a 3 tonne truck falling onto your gran (I don't know where that simile came from but I like it =D ), this track delivers so much, and the spoken word comic book lines spice it up and add to the dark, spooky vibe.

Lovely stuff.

Now then...

This track reminded me of a song I heard when I first started listening to D&B.

"Dick Tracey"

Made a few years ago by Nero (who is now pretty big in the D&B and Dubstep scenes), it utilises the same kind of comic book speech, right down to the phrase "...cruel eyes surveyed his grim work".
Got some damn banging bass as well, but I can only find a 128kbs version.

The Avalanches' Since I left you album was a groundbreaking release in its own right, having sampled an absolute tonne of vinyl and lumping it together, it resulted in some of the most awe inspiring and interesting songs to come from such a method.

Two hearts in 3/4 time isn't the most well know song off the album, but it is a firm favorite of mine, and a brilliant, happy, drifting summery tune to chill out to.

Another early morning with no desire for sleep, a failed copy of Ableton Live (I need to buy it at some point...) and a lack of any musical devices at my disposal (I'm not at home/my small room in uni halls) leaves me to whack a few tunes onto the internet.
And write a little bit more than I normally do due to the aforementioned reasons.

We have a track here from Mustard Pimp, who were previously mentioned a few weeks ago, but have come out with a lovely little ditty that made me jump around with my headphones on until they fell off.
Called Télésiège, it's quirky electro sound gives a nod to the fidget house sound that sort of does but then again sort of doesn't exist because the majority of people who produce it don't think its a proper name....

or something like that.

Interestingly it has been the biggest selling album ever in terms of digital sales (according to their website).

My favorite remixes have to be those of Use Somebody, the breakdown proves to be very flexible for remixing and molding into new forms allowing for some major creative use of beats.

I really liked this tune at first.

Then a few days later, I came back to it and wondered why the bloody hell I bought it.

But then it grew on me like a bastard.

It just has that lovely happy warm electro feeling that only Deadmau5 knows how to give, and it's such a fun track!

Just got a copy of Mistabishi's new album, Drop, and its a bit of brilliant.

Released Hospital Records, it has a good mix of D&B and dubstep, and his songs are flying up the beatport charts.

Printer Jam

is an absolutely inspired tune (sampling a printer, sounds crazyyyy),

and

White Collar Grime

is a hella bad, meaty dubstep banger.

Machines Don't Care is a new project from Hervé, featuring collaborations with Sinden, Fake Blood, Toddla T, Trevor Loveys and a few more.

According to Hervé, it's so he can work with the people he wants to "and fuck off the stupid definitions that get put on our music".

I've finally got round to making a music blog, something I've been meaning to do for a while.

=D

I intend to do the whole post a few tracks kinda thing, while I shamelessly plug anything that I think everyone should listen to.

Expect some nice and meaty house, D&B and dubstep choons appearing on a regular basis, along with anything that seems like it would be at home on this humble little chunk of the interweb.

I owe my love of electronic music to Leeds festival '06, where I stumbled upon the dance tent, got a bit fucked, and loved every minute of it.

Tocadisco's remix of Mylo's "In Your Arms" was the first dance song that I really vibed with after my introduction to dance music, and it helped to open a doorway to a form of music I had never appreciated much before.

I'm also loving Rusko's "Mr. Chips" at the moment.
Because its just beefy and nice. And samples the buzzer from the TV show catchphrase, hence the name.
